Sending Detroit choir to competition in Latvia shows S3’s commitment to children, culture and community

Strategic Staffing Solutions is committed to furthering culture, helping children succeed and giving back to the communities in which we do business. So when the opportunity came up to help the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit’s internationally acclaimed Mosaic Singers compete in the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia, it was a no-brainer. It would do all three.

S3 has an office in Riga, Latvia, so not only is this sponsorship helping children, it is also furthering culture and giving back to the community where it does business.

Mosaic Singers perform at S3’s 2014 All Staff meeting.

S3 is providing the resources for the group to compete with 500 or so choirs from 60 countries in what has become known as the “Olympics for Choirs.”  In its eighth year, the World Choir Games is the world’s largest choir competition and will be held July 9-19. About 20,000 singers from all over the world are expected to participate in the Games, which follow the Olympic ideals of excellence, friendship and respect. Mosaic will take 26 young artists and four chaperones on the trip.

“We want the world to know what tremendous talent we have in Detroit,” said Cindy Pasky, president and CEO of Strategic Staffing Solutions. “The Mosaic Singers are a wonderful example of that talent. They will compete with some of the best choirs in the world and I know they will do so with the same passion for success we have in Detroit and at S3.”

The World Choir Games will be one of the highlights of the European Capital of Culture 2014 in Riga. Each year the European Commission choses two cities as European Capitals of Culture. Riga and Umeå, Sweden, share the title this year.

“Words cannot begin to express our gratitude and appreciation to Strategic Staffing Solutions for making this trip of a lifetime and opportunity possible for our Mosaic Singers,” said Rick Sperling, CEO and founder of Mosaic Youth Theatre. “We look forward to competing in Latvia and showcasing Detroit’s amazing talent through these young voices on a global stage.”

While in Latvia, the choir will also perform in public friendship concerts and will make a side trip to Vilnius, Lithuania, for additional performances. S3 also has an office in Vilnius. American embassies in both countries are working with the S3 team to find the best venues to showcase the Mosaic choir. The dates are yet to be determined.

In Latvia the World Choir Games will feature a major concert showcasing the thousands of singers at “Mežaparks,” a neighborhood in North Central Riga. The park, built in the early 20th century, was one of the world’s first garden cities. It hosts the Latvian Song and Dance Festival in late July every four years.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the Mosaic Singers of the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit,” said Andris Razans, ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to the USA and Mexico. “I am particularly very happy that you are coming from Michigan – a state with which Latvia has a long-lasting and deep cooperation. I wish you all success in the World Choir Games.”

The Mosaic Singers have performed in more than 25 states, at The White House and The Kennedy Center. Internationally, they have represented the United States at the World Festival of Children’s Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, performed at The Millennium Dome in London England, and participated in cultural exchanges with Dakar, Senegal and Singapore.

In 2013, S3 donated more than $1 million and thousands of volunteer hours to charitable efforts around the world and has donated more than $7 million since 2005.

It also sponsors an emergency dental program for kids, awards scholarships through Wayne State University, provides free shoes to kids in need and sends hundreds of needy children to summer camp.

“At S3 we are all about helping children and supporting the communities in which we do business,” Pasky said. “Detroit Hoops allows us to do both.”

The MetroPCS Motor City Hoops Classic will also bring Downtown Detroit corporations and businesses together in the spirit of for their support and employee participation in the tournament. Downtown businesses are expected to enter teams in several corporate competition divisions.

S3 also participates in another set of collaborative corporate games. Those are called the Live Downtown Games. For the promotion and formation of a positive image of Lithuania to potential investors to set up representative offices in Lithuania and starting up her own company, Strategic Staffing Solutions International, in Kaunas in 1999. After assembling several advertising programs it did not take her long to prove to the foreign investment companies that Lithuania has it all. Smart people, a growing economy, quality education, arts and a super location.

There are many success stories. Their 1000+ jobs brought back from overseas helped talented Lithuanians.

Cindy, along with President Valdas Adamkus and the US Ambassador, and her supported initiative of the ExCEL program, enable 10-plus high school kids from Lithuania to come to the best schools in the US to study for one school year.

S3 sponsorship of Eastern Market will bring jobs, more fresh food to Detroit

Every Saturday during winter (and more often during the summer months) Detroiters flock to Eastern Market to buy fresh food, check out the vendors and just plain mingle and enjoy the day. Most Saturdays you can find Cindy Pasky, Strategic Staffing Solutions (S3) president and CEO, at the market. After all, she’s a downtown business leader who actually lives in the city.

eastern-market-strategic-staffing-bannerThe six-block public market has a long history. It’s been feeding Detroit and providing jobs since 1891. Every Saturday it is transformed into a vibrant marketplace with hundreds of open-air stalls. As the Market says it’s “where everyone from toddlers to tycoons look for fruits, veggies, fresh-cut flowers, homemade jams, maple syrups, locally produced specialty food products, pasture and/or grass-fed meat and even an occasional goose or rabbit.”

The Market is a great place to visit and spend a few hours but it also has the potential to make an even bigger impact on Detroit’s economy and its residents.

According to the Market, estimates say if 25% of our food could be sourced locally it would generate nearly 5,000 jobs, create $20 million in new local taxes and $125 million in new household income.  Detroit sure could use those jobs and those dollars.

With that in mind, S3 entered into a three-year commitment to sponsor Eastern Market’s Winter Season and support to expand educational aspects of the Friends of Eastern Market program. While S3 never reveals the dollar figure of its sponsorships, this one is indeed major.

“Eastern Market is one of Detroit’s treasures and S3 is committed to supporting our city’s gems and the health of those who live here,” said Pasky. “Our sponsorship will help develop and advance one of Detroit’s most cherished places, increase job opportunities and improve access to healthy foods at America’s most complete metropolitan food hub.”

87That gift will help increase awareness of Eastern Market during the winter season and allow it to continue to build new programs as new market facilities, such as the Detroit Community Kitchen, come on line. Its support of Friends of Eastern Market helps the Market continue to improve access to healthy, green, affordable and fair food choices in Detroit and throughout Southeast Michigan while also strengthening the food sector as a pillar of regional economic growth.

Colorful S3 winter season street pole banners and signage have been installed to better welcome Eastern Market visitors from now until the end of March.

“Throughout the year, the nature of the market changes with the seasons. By developing seasonal sponsorships for the winter, spring, summer, harvest, and holiday seasons we hope to develop new programs and marketing materials that highlight each season’s distinctiveness,” said Dan Carmody, president of Eastern Market. “We’re grateful for Cindy Pasky’s outstanding leadership in paving the way and appreciate S3’s support as our first seasonal Market sponsor.”

Check it out.

Family roots lead to success and fostering investment in Lithuania

Fifteen years ago Strategic Staffing Solutions decided to go international but where to start. Europe for sure … but where?

S3’s founder Cindy Pasky looked her roots. Her grandparents were from Kaunas, Lithuania, and came to Detroit in 1911. She grew up hearing them speak Lithuanian and cook traditional dishes. She visited the country’s capital, Vilnius, for the first time in 1996, while on a cultural tour with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. At that time Lithuania had been an independent country for just six years. It declared itself an independent political state, free of Soviet Union rule. The Soviets seized the Baltic State 1939 and continued to control it after World War II.

Vilnius AerialPasky saw the possibilities and in 1999 opened S3I (the I stands for international) in Lithuania. That country was chosen because of what it could offer S3. Being part of Pasky’s heritage was an added bonus. Geographically, Lithuania could serve S3’s customers in the Baltic and Nordic States and throughout Europe. The decision was a good one. As Lithuania developed as a country its fast growing economy and membership in the European Union and NATO allowed S3 to expand its customer support across Europe.

Originally, S3 helped Lithuanians find professional opportunities in Scandinavia and the U.S. After 2004, it re-oriented the business to attract foreign investors to discover and hire Lithuania’s exceptional talent at home. S3 invested significantly in international promotion programs – often in partnership with Invest Lithuania – hiring and training a staff that could effectively promote Lithuania to S3 clients in the U.S. and the UK.

Today, S3I provides services to companies in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and Sweden. The company offers its customers system development services, information technology (IT) consulting and staffing services and customized project solutions. In the past four years, S3I has placed more than 1,800 consultants with major companies in the region.

As it does with every community in which it does business, S3 is committed to helping Lithuania move forward. Following are several examples of the company’s contributions to Lithuanian business, science, arts and culture:

  • In 2012 agreed to serve as the founding chair of the American Lithuanian Business Council; other Council members include Chevron, Western Union, ThermoFischer Scientific, Exelon and Philip Morris International
  • Regularly partners with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Lithuania in Washington, DC, as well as the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius, on a variety of public and civic affairs programs
  • During the past five years brought young Lithuanians who left for work abroad back to Lithuania for career opportunities with clients in Vilnius and Kaunas and has recruited Lithuanians from seven different countries and regularly sponsors recruitment events and activities outside of Lithuania – from London to Copenhagen to Chicago and beyond
  • Invested significantly in international programs – often in partnership with Invest Lithuania – to promote Lithuania to S3 clients in the US and the UK
  • For the last five years has been the leading sponsor of the American Baltic Celebration annual awards gala in Washington, DC
  • Was the largest private company (financial) sponsor of the American Chamber of Commerce-supported US Trade Mission to Lithuania
  • Is the lead sponsor of the ExCel High School Exchange program, which brings Lithuanian students to the US to study for one year
  • Helped establish innovative professional training programs, such as the Mainframe Academy designed by an S3 client with Vilnius University, to provide skills and jobs to students willing to learn a specialized and high-demand skill
  • Supports a series of World Music performances, including American performers and others, for its third season in 2014.
  • Has been a leading sponsor of the opera in Vilnius
  • Is a major donor to an orphanage in the town of Pabrade, providing financial support and volunteer days by staff

These accomplishments and contributions were the reason Pasky, S3’s president and CEO, received the Global Lithuanian Award for Attraction of Investments in 2013 from the Global Lithuanian Leaders (GLL) in early January.

Cynthia Pasky is directly responsible for significant achievements in attracting foreign investment to Lithuania, creating a positive brand for Lithuania in the world, and educational and professional development of Lithuanian talent,” said Kotryna Stankutė-Jaščemskienė, director of Global Lithuanian Leaders. “She and her company have been passionate and steadfast champions of Lithuania in the world. They have earned huge respect in the local business community and with the prominent leaders who nominated her for the award. GLL is more than happy that the Global Lithuanian Awards created the opportunity to acknowledge and reward Cynthia Pasky and other global Lithuanians for the promotion of Lithuania in the world.”

Dalia Grybauskaitė and Cindy Pasky

That commitment earned Pasky and S3 significant stature among Lithuanians and Lithuanian business. The award was presented to Pasky by the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė for the contributions she and S3 have made to the development of Lithuanian business, science, arts and culture.

“It is indeed an honor to receive this award, but it is not about what I have done,” said Pasky. “It is about what the S3 team has done not only to further our business in Lithuania but also to give back to the Lithuanian community.”

Not content to just say thank you, each year, Pasky brings the entire S3 International team from Lithuania to Detroit for a week of training and development…and a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner, which she prepares personally and serves to the team in her home.

Christmas is a little bit warmer this year for children in need thanks to Adopt-A-Child

carl-bently-adopt-a-child

Throngs of smiling, excited children from all corners of the region rushed into Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit with their families on December 6 as if Christmas was coming early.

That’s because in a way, it was.

They were part of the Adopt-A-Child program created by the North End Youth Improvement Council (NEYIC). Again this year people working in S3’s Detroit offices and other business and organizations in the city brought Christmas gifts for more than 2,500 underprivileged youngsters. Those participating are asked to donate warm coats, mittens, gloves, clothing and a toy. S3 employees have donated gifts to the program for more than 10 years.

“The children receive much needed clothing and often a toy or other gifts that let them know love, kindness and caring are very much a part of Detroit,” said Cindy Pasky, president and CEO of Strategic Staffing Solutions, which is participating in the program. “When the children’s faces light up you can see the true meaning of the season … giving back and gaining joy from the true meaning of love …. doing things for others.”

The program is open to every family and child who needs it, no matter which neighborhood or metro Detroit city they live in. It was founded more than 50 years ago, and they’ve seen a lot of changes over the years.

“Our goal is to extend a hand of loving kindness to youngsters who come to us from foster care, single parent homes and shelters,” said Mary Bennett of the North End Youth Improvement Council (NEYIC). “Typically we run out of good Samaritans long before we run out of kids in need of our assistance.”

Sponsors include 36th District Court, Craig Strong, Lakeshore, Child Protective Services, Detroit 300, KPMG, Skillman Foundation, NAACP, White Castle, the Detroit Police Department, Betty DeRamus, Mayor Bing’s Office; the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Comerica, IRS, General Motors Foundation, Skillman Foundation, The UPS Foundation, City of Detroit ITS Department & Department of Recreation, The Lake Community Church and other volunteers from near and far to give a helping hand.

A litany of organizations presented checks during the event, including UAW/GM, Sheriff Benny Napoleon’s office and Strategic Staffing Solutions. The UAW check exceeded $10,000. Many of the employees of these groups volunteer their time wrapping and selecting presents, as well as spending time with the kids.

There’s still time if you want to support the organization with a donation. After all, need knows no season. Visit the North End Improvement Council website here.

Celebrating our first generation of Veterans 230 years ago this month

Happy Veterans Day!

Today we celebrate the service of our nation’s veterans and the sacrifices they’ve made for the noble cause of democracy and freedom. In a few weeks’ time, however, a date will likely pass without much notice or fanfare, but will mark the 230th anniversary of an important date in our country’s incredible history.

Veterans Day 230 yearsThat date is November 25 and the year was 1783.  It marks the date that the British evacuated New York City (Manhattan to be specific) and ended seven years of occupation by the military forces of King George III, and a long and costly war for both sides of the conflict.  The Revolutionary War was over.  Ironically, the location of this event was just a few miles from Kips Bay, where in 1776, General George Washington had shouted in rage and despair at his retreating army … a rare moment of visible emotion for the commander in chief.

What a difference seven years can make.  On November 25, 1783, high noon was the time set for the official relinquishment of power between the British forces and the American military commanded by General George Washington and empowered by the Continental Congress … but that time ticked on by.  Finally, around 1:00 PM the British withdrew their troops from their last posts and the Americans marched in.  In the column of American troops was the Second Massachusetts Regiment, a single troop of dragoons, two artillery companies, and a battalion of light infantry … a small contingent compared to the vanquished forces of the British crown.

As the Americans took over, a parade formed, the new 13-stripe flag was unfurled, a 13-gun salute was prepared, bells rang from nearby churches and town buildings, and pride and excitement reigned throughout the city.  Throngs greeted the incoming troops and General Washington with shouts and tears of joy.

One woman later recalled in her diary the terribly moving scene, describing first the British troops and then the Americans:

“We had been accustomed for a long time to military display in all the finish and finery of garrison life. The troops just leaving us were as if equipped for show, and with their scarlet uniforms and burnished arms made a brilliant display. The troops that marched in, on the contrary, were ill-clad and weather- beaten, and made a forlorn appearance. But then, they were our troops, and as I looked at them and thought upon all they had done and suffered for us, my heart and my eyes were full, and I admired and glorified in them the more, because they were weather-beaten and forlorn.”

These “weather-beaten and forlorn” troops were, in fact, our first generation of veterans.  Like most veterans, I suppose, they had joined the “glorious cause” for a wide variety of reasons that hasn’t changed much over time:  Patriotism, adventure, loyalty, camaraderie, tradition, a sense community, a sense of service, a sense of belonging to a cause greater than themselves.

America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade goes to the dogs and cats

As kid I bet you loved Detroit’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. You’d waited all year long for the holiday season to begin and you couldn’t wait to watch the spectacular floats, loud marching bands, colorful clowns and high flying balloons move down Woodward. Then, finally, along came the reindeer pulling “the real Santa Claus” in his sleigh down the street to a podium where he accepted the key to our city “and the hearts of good children everywhere.”

Float 2 compressedWhat am I saying? I bet you still love it as an adult.  I also bet you love animals. Well, have I got a deal for you. This year there is a new float in the America’s Thanksgiving Parade that is loaded with dogs and cats … wagging tails and all.

The new Strategic Staffing Solutions’ float called “Disco Dogs & Cool Cats” will be a star in this year’s parade. Called the world’s longest convertible by The Parade Company, this larger-than-life mobile display measures more than 120 feet long and is more than 14 feet tall. It’s adorned with more than 17 cats and dogs, an 8-foot tall disco ball and more than 100 dog bones. Take special notice of the dog and cat sitting at the front of the float. The dog is Chrissy and the cat is Trumbull, the pets of Paul Huxley, S3 chairman, and Cindy Pasky, the company’s president, CEO and founder. Huxley is also vice chairman of the Michigan Humane Society board.

The float is sure to become a favorite for animal lovers and parade goers alike. It was designed by Mishara Walker from S3 in collaboration with The Parade Company.

float 3 compressedThe float was unveiled on Wednesday, October 23 by S3 and The Parade Company along the riverfront at Rivard Plaza and Pavilion, which is maintained and operated by the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy. The Conservancy is developing three-and-a-half miles along the east riverfront, which has more than three million visitors annually.

“At S3 we value traditions. Traditions like the America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade bring joy to so many and bring together the metro Detroit community,” said Pasky. “This parade is truly part of Detroit’s culture. It is a very special and wonderful time to show our city off to the world.  S3 is very pleased to be a part of it.”

“We are extremely grateful to have S3 as a Parade Company supporter and our team is privileged to work with a Detroit company that is so committed to our community and region,” said Tony Michaels, president & CEO of The Parade Company.

float 5 compressedThe unveil also supported the Michigan Humane Society. Those attending brought a can of pet food drive and all who donated entered a chance to win a unique opportunity to walk in the parade with S3.

The need to help animals in Detroit is great. Huxley said the humane society’s Cruelty and Rescue Team responds to 10,000 calls each year. In addition, the society’s Detroit Center for Animal Care at 7401 Chrysler Drive just off I-75 sheltered 12,000 animals this year alone.

So, in honor of the new float and dogs and cats everywhere, put your paws together for Detroit, America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Parade Company and the Michigan Humane Society.

The story behind our green Detroit roots

Green. Why in the world is everything at S3 green?

detroit-tigers-s3It’s one of those things that inevitably comes up with new hires and talked about with customers. Why, in a world where everyone’s trying to attach themselves to the color and flavor of the month, did Strategic Staffing Solutions pick, and stick with, deep green as its corporate color 20 years ago?

To find the answer, you need to look back into the history of the company, its proud Detroit roots and the passion S3’s founder, Cindy Pasky, has for baseball.

If you’ve met Cindy, you know she’s an avid Detroit Tigers fan. Opening Day in Detroit is a spectacle, especially around the S3 office. It’s common on that day to see the office filled with folks working in the jerseys of their favorite Tiger players.

But as you might know, the colors of the Detroit Tigers are orange, blue and white. Not green. So you may think our story is ending. Au Contraire!

Here’s an interesting fact. If you took a look at the seats of the old Tiger Stadium, the one Cindy watched the games from as a child and the one the Tigers still played at when S3 was founded, you’d notice they are … you guessed it … that shade of green!

Now you know why S3 goes green.
