S³ sponsors Mosaic Singers trip to compete in World Choir Games in Latvia and they bring back gold

Strategic Staffing Solutions sponsorship of the Mosaic Singers trip to Latvia to compete in the World Choir Games paid off … in gold and silver and an experience of a lifetime for 26 young artists.

The Mosaic Singers, part of the Mosaic Youth Theatre, spent the last two weeks in Latvia competing in the World Choir Games with a side trip to Lithuania to meet the US ambassador to Lithuania and to sing in phenomenal places such as the St. Kazimieras Church in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, and the Concert Hall at the Marijampole House of Culture in the town of Marijampole. Both were standing-room only.

The concert at St. Kazimieras was broadcast live on the internet. It benefited the ExCel high-school exchange, a program that S³ also sponsors. That program brings Lithuanian high school students to study in the US and live with an American host family for one school year.

At Marijampole the audience stood and applauded non-stop for several minutes at the end until the choir did not one, but two encores.

“We got the response from many that “Mariajampole has never seen anything like this before,” says the Mosaic Facebook page.

As invited guests of the US Ambassador to Lithuania, Deborah A. McCarthy, they toured the US Embassy and put on a short concert there.

The Singers even performed the Lithuanian national anthem … in Lithuanian … perfectly on Good Morning Lithuania. That show reaches one million people.

“The Mosaic Singers were awesome,” said Cindy Pasky, CEO of Strategic Staffing Solutions, who travelled to Lithuania to see the choir perform in Marijampole and Vilnius. “They showed the world what tremendous talent we have in the USA and Detroit. S³ was proud to sponsor them. They represent everything we stand for … determination, quality, professionalism and setting the bar high for success.”

Twenty-six young Mosaic singers, ages 14-18, made the trip and sang their hearts out every day … including impromptu concerts in the airport, on buses, public spaces and many other places.

“We have to thank Cindy Pasky, Paul Huxley and everyone at Strategic Staffing Solutions for their incredible generosity in making this once-of-lifetime opportunity possible for the young artists of Mosaic,” said Rick Sperling, CEO of the Mosaic Youth Theatre. “In addition to the World Choir Games in Latvia, it was an incredible experience having Strategic Staffing Solutions bring Mosaic to Lithuania as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. and Detroit.”

Mosaic Singers perform at CaimirThis World Choir Games competition is a big deal. Singers came from five continents and 73 countries. There were 460 choirs and 27,000 participants competed. Awards were presented in 29 categories.

“These accomplishments (of the Mosaic Singers) are the result of our emphasis on setting high expectations for Detroit youth and giving them the support and training needed to reach them,” said Sperling. “What these young people accomplished was not just a result of talent, but of incredible hard work, determination, resiliency and professionalism — qualities that will continue to serve them in whatever path they choose to pursue in life.”

Here’s a rundown of the medals won by the Mosaic Singers:

  • Gold in the Pop category
  • Gold in Gospel … Mosaic ranked 4th in the world overall in choral gospel
  • Silver in Spiritual
  • Silver in the Mixed Youth Choir Open Competition

The Mosaic Singers first won two silver medals but were not content. They wanted gold and vowed to get it. When the announcement came that they won the gold chants of USA, USA, USA could be heard drowning out the applause. Remind you of the Olympics? It should this competition is often referred to as the Olympics for Choirs.

During the Mosaic’s World Choir Games Qualification Concerts in Pop they quickly had the European audience clapping (unsolicited) and hooting and hollering. These are not the easiest performances because there is no audience, just three judges staring at you and taking notes. These young artists came through like pros.

“We are so proud of how the Mosaic young artists represented Detroit and USA at the World Choir Games,” Sperling said. “While we are proud of all of our awards, the Gold Medal in Gospel and Silver Medal in Spiritual are especially meaningful because they came in the Champions Competition where our 14-18 year old young artists were competing against the best choirs of all ages from all around the world.”

The Mosaic Singers also joined all the thousands of other singers at a major concert in the “Mežaparks,” a neighborhood in North Central Riga, Latvia, and other “friendship concerts” in Latvia.

The Mosaic Singers are no strangers to travel. They have performed in more than 25 states, at The White House and The Kennedy Center. Internationally, they have represented the United States at the World Festival of Children’s Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, performed at The Millennium Dome in London England, and participated in cultural exchanges with Dakar, Senegal and Singapore.

Since the Games were created in 2000 the worldwide operating organization INTERKULTUR from Pohlheim has been in charge of the program. The event takes place every two years in alternating cities. It was last held in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2012. Previous hosts included Austria, South Korea, Germany and China.

S³ adopts all five horses in the Detroit Police Department’s Mounted Unit

Strategic Staffing Solutions (S3) has adopted the Detroit Police Department’s Mounted Unit for one year.  S3 will pay for the general care of the Mounted Unit’s five horses for the entire year, including hay, feed, vitamins, medications, bedding, vaccinations and vet costs, and new shoes and trim every six weeks. Care for one horse per year costs $7,500.

“Detroit must be safe and secure to attract the businesses and talent it needs to grow and continue on with its transformation,” said Cindy Pasky, president and CEO of Strategic Staffing Solutions. “The Mounted Unit plays a key role in that attraction through crime prevention and detection as well as community engagement. S3 is glad to help support the men and women of that unit as they work every day to keep our city safe.”

The Mounted Unit rides 365 days a year unless weather does not permit (below 15 degrees, heavy rain, lighting or ice storms).

They maintain police presence through daily patrols around busy Downtown and Midtown areas.  At night, the unit patrols entertainment districts and the Detroit RiverWalk.  Officers and horses also patrol neighborhoods and parks as needed based on crime activities.

DPD_Mntd182The unit patrols major sporting events at all three sports venues downtown (Comerica Park, Ford Field and Joe Louis Arena) and is on site during any concerts held at these venues, as well.

Additionally, officers and horses attend hundreds of school and community events as requested, as well as career days and block parties.

“The Mounted Unit represents an important branch in Detroit’s Police Department, including Search and Rescue and crowd control,” said Mounted Unit Sergeant Erik Eide.  “We are beyond humbled by Strategic Staffing Solution’s generosity in helping us care for our horses.”  The Mounted Unit is comprised of Big Baby, Elmo, Ivan, Tiny and Vader.

Sgt. Eide first met representatives from S3 in December at the Detroit Public Safety Foundation’s Above & Beyond Awards Ceremony, resulting in S3’s interest to adopt the horses.

“The service provided by the Detroit Police Mounted Unit to our citizens is immeasurable,” said Chief James Craig. “The very generous donation and adoption of our horses by S3 is more than just a financial pledge – it is a strong commitment to the community in which we all serve.”

The adoption was made through the Detroit Public Safety Foundation.

S3 puts its head, heart, hands and health into 4-H program

Strategic Staffing Solutions is committed to helping the next generation prepare for success. So when one its customers asked for support for 4-H, S3 jumped at the chance.

Cindy Pasky

S3 was one of the sponsors at the National 4-H Council’s 5th annual Legacy Awards Gala recently held at the Newseum in Washington, DC.

“S3 is all about helping set children on the right course to succeed in life,” said Cindy Pasky, president and CEO. “4-H works with them to shape that course, define their place in the in the world and learn to stand up for themselves, their community and those less fortunate. It is a perfect fit for S3. Like 4-H we want to make the best better and we have pledged our heads to clearer thinking, our hearts to greater loyalty, our hands larger service and our health to better living.”

Pasky and two other S3 executives, Allen Coleman, executive vice president, and Jeff Nelson, vice president, attended the event. In addition, the ambassadors from Latvia and Lithuania to the US Andris Razans and Zygmantas Pavilionis respectively attended the gala. S³ has branches in both those countries.

Funds from the 4-H Legacy Awards Gala are used by the National 4-H Council to increase access and the opportunity for more young people to grow through a 4-H experience.  This includes:

  • Increasing programming in both urban and rural areas in the US
  • Building global partnerships and connecting U.S. 4-H youth to 4-H’ers on other continents
  • Preparing youth for STEM-based jobs, creating a healthier world and ensuring a food secure planet

At an early age, participation in 4-H encourages a love of agriculture and helps children begin to develop leadership skills that will help them succeed throughout their lives.  Research  shows 4-Hers are nearly four times more likely than their peers to contribute to their communities, two times more likely to make healthy choices and two times more likely to participate in science programs outside of school. In addition, 4-H girls are two times more likely (Grade 10) and nearly three times more likely (Grade 12) to take part in science programs compared to girls in other out-of-school time activities.

pledgecloverThe National 4-H Council pledges to share 4-H programs broadly and to amplify the urgent need for investment in youth.  More than 6 million youth, ages 8-19, are currently engaged in 4-H projects in the areas of citizenship, science and healthy living under the guidance of more than half a million adult volunteers.

While most of us think of 4-H as a program for rural communities, that’s just not so. Youth in urban and suburban areas are also engaged in the positive 4-H experience. In fact, 4-H is one of the largest youth development organizations in the world. Its Facebook page has more than 500,000 followers.

“As America’s largest youth development organization, 4-H helps grow remarkable young people into confident adults with purpose,” said Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO, National 4-H Council.

The organization has some pretty spectacular alumni including Andrew Bosworth, vice president of ads and pages at Facebook and inventor of the social media site’s popular “news feed,” and Anne Burrell, celebrity chef, author and Food Network host.  They received Distinguished Alumni medallions at the gala.

“Every year, the 4-H Legacy Awards gives us an opportunity to shine a light on the dynamic alumni, young people, professionals, donors and public figures who make the 4-H experience one that is life-changing,” said Sirangelo.

Just for the record one of every 7 adult Americans is a former 4-Her. Other famous former 4-Hers include David Letterman, Julie Roberts, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Alan Shepherd, Roy Rogers, Johnny Carson, Al Gore, Faith Hill, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Lamar Alexander, Herschel Walker, Reggie White, Orville Redenbacher and Roslyn and Jimmy Carter.

4-H programs are implemented by the 109 land-grant universities and cooperative extension in the US through more than 3,000 local offices serving every county and parish in the country. Outside the United States, 4-H programs operate through independent, country-led organizations in more than 50 countries.

Sending Detroit choir to competition in Latvia shows S3’s commitment to children, culture and community

Strategic Staffing Solutions is committed to furthering culture, helping children succeed and giving back to the communities in which we do business. So when the opportunity came up to help the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit’s internationally acclaimed Mosaic Singers compete in the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia, it was a no-brainer. It would do all three.

S3 has an office in Riga, Latvia, so not only is this sponsorship helping children, it is also furthering culture and giving back to the community where it does business.

S3 is providing the resources for the group to compete with 500 or so choirs from 60 countries in what has become known as the “Olympics for Choirs.”  In its eighth year, the World Choir Games is the world’s largest choir competition and will be held July 9-19. About 20,000 singers from all over the world are expected to participate in the Games, which follow the Olympic ideals of excellence, friendship and respect. Mosaic will take 26 young artists and four chaperones on the trip.

“We want the world to know what tremendous talent we have in Detroit,” said Cindy Pasky, president and CEO of Strategic Staffing Solutions. “The Mosaic Singers are a wonderful example of that talent. They will compete with some of the best choirs in the world and I know they will do so with the same passion for success we have in Detroit and at S3.”

The World Choir Games will be one of the highlights of the European Capital of Culture 2014 in Riga. Each year the European Commission choses two cities as European Capitals of Culture. Riga and Umeå, Sweden, share the title this year.

“Words cannot begin to express our gratitude and appreciation to Strategic Staffing Solutions for making this trip of a lifetime and opportunity possible for our Mosaic Singers,” said Rick Sperling, CEO and founder of Mosaic Youth Theatre. “We look forward to competing in Latvia and showcasing Detroit’s amazing talent through these young voices on a global stage.”

While in Latvia, the choir will also perform in public friendship concerts and will make a side trip to Vilnius, Lithuania, for additional performances. S3 also has an office in Vilnius. American embassies in both countries are working with the S3 team to find the best venues to showcase the Mosaic choir. The dates are yet to be determined.

In Latvia the World Choir Games will feature a major concert showcasing the thousands of singers at “Mežaparks,” a neighborhood in North Central Riga. The park, built in the early 20th century, was one of the world’s first garden cities. It hosts the Latvian Song and Dance Festival in late July every four years.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the Mosaic Singers of the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit,” said Andris Razans, ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to the USA and Mexico. “I am particularly very happy that you are coming from Michigan – a state with which Latvia has a long-lasting and deep cooperation. I wish you all success in the World Choir Games.”

The Mosaic Singers have performed in more than 25 states, at The White House and The Kennedy Center. Internationally, they have represented the United States at the World Festival of Children’s Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, performed at The Millennium Dome in London England, and participated in cultural exchanges with Dakar, Senegal and Singapore.

In 2013, S3 donated more than $1 million and thousands of volunteer hours to charitable efforts around the world and has donated more than $7 million since 2005.

S3 sponsorship of Eastern Market will bring jobs, more fresh food to Detroit

Every Saturday during winter (and more often during the summer months) Detroiters flock to Eastern Market to buy fresh food, check out the vendors and just plain mingle and enjoy the day. Most Saturdays you can find Cindy Pasky, Strategic Staffing Solutions (S3) president and CEO, at the market. After all, she’s a downtown business leader who actually lives in the city.

eastern-market-strategic-staffing-bannerThe six-block public market has a long history. It’s been feeding Detroit and providing jobs since 1891. Every Saturday it is transformed into a vibrant marketplace with hundreds of open-air stalls. As the Market says it’s “where everyone from toddlers to tycoons look for fruits, veggies, fresh-cut flowers, homemade jams, maple syrups, locally produced specialty food products, pasture and/or grass-fed meat and even an occasional goose or rabbit.”

The Market is a great place to visit and spend a few hours but it also has the potential to make an even bigger impact on Detroit’s economy and its residents.

According to the Market, estimates say if 25% of our food could be sourced locally it would generate nearly 5,000 jobs, create $20 million in new local taxes and $125 million in new household income.  Detroit sure could use those jobs and those dollars.

With that in mind, S3 entered into a three-year commitment to sponsor Eastern Market’s Winter Season and support to expand educational aspects of the Friends of Eastern Market program. While S3 never reveals the dollar figure of its sponsorships, this one is indeed major.

“Eastern Market is one of Detroit’s treasures and S3 is committed to supporting our city’s gems and the health of those who live here,” said Pasky. “Our sponsorship will help develop and advance one of Detroit’s most cherished places, increase job opportunities and improve access to healthy foods at America’s most complete metropolitan food hub.”

87That gift will help increase awareness of Eastern Market during the winter season and allow it to continue to build new programs as new market facilities, such as the Detroit Community Kitchen, come on line. Its support of Friends of Eastern Market helps the Market continue to improve access to healthy, green, affordable and fair food choices in Detroit and throughout Southeast Michigan while also strengthening the food sector as a pillar of regional economic growth.

Colorful S3 winter season street pole banners and signage have been installed to better welcome Eastern Market visitors from now until the end of March.

“Throughout the year, the nature of the market changes with the seasons. By developing seasonal sponsorships for the winter, spring, summer, harvest, and holiday seasons we hope to develop new programs and marketing materials that highlight each season’s distinctiveness,” said Dan Carmody, president of Eastern Market. “We’re grateful for Cindy Pasky’s outstanding leadership in paving the way and appreciate S3’s support as our first seasonal Market sponsor.”

Check it out.

Family roots lead to success and fostering investment in Lithuania

Fifteen years ago Strategic Staffing Solutions decided to go international but where to start. Europe for sure … but where?

S3’s founder Cindy Pasky looked her roots. Her grandparents were from Kaunas, Lithuania, and came to Detroit in 1911. She grew up hearing them speak Lithuanian and cook traditional dishes. She visited the country’s capital, Vilnius, for the first time in 1996, while on a cultural tour with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. At that time Lithuania had been an independent country for just six years. It declared itself an independent political state, free of Soviet Union rule. The Soviets seized the Baltic State 1939 and continued to control it after World War II.

Vilnius AerialPasky saw the possibilities and in 1999 opened S3I (the I stands for international) in Lithuania. That country was chosen because of what it could offer S3. Being part of Pasky’s heritage was an added bonus. Geographically, Lithuania could serve S3’s customers in the Baltic and Nordic States and throughout Europe. The decision was a good one. As Lithuania developed as a country its fast growing economy and membership in the European Union and NATO allowed S3 to expand its customer support across Europe.

Originally, S3 helped Lithuanians find professional opportunities in Scandinavia and the U.S. After 2004, it re-oriented the business to attract foreign investors to discover and hire Lithuania’s exceptional talent at home. S3 invested significantly in international promotion programs – often in partnership with Invest Lithuania – hiring and training a staff that could effectively promote Lithuania to S3 clients in the U.S. and the UK.

Today, S3I provides services to companies in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and Sweden. The company offers its customers system development services, information technology (IT) consulting and staffing services and customized project solutions. In the past four years, S3I has placed more than 1,800 consultants with major companies in the region.

As it does with every community in which it does business, S3 is committed to helping Lithuania move forward. Following are several examples of the company’s contributions to Lithuanian business, science, arts and culture:

  • In 2012 agreed to serve as the founding chair of the American Lithuanian Business Council; other Council members include Chevron, Western Union, ThermoFischer Scientific, Exelon and Philip Morris International
  • Regularly partners with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Lithuania in Washington, DC, as well as the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius, on a variety of public and civic affairs programs
  • During the past five years brought young Lithuanians who left for work abroad back to Lithuania for career opportunities with clients in Vilnius and Kaunas and has recruited Lithuanians from seven different countries and regularly sponsors recruitment events and activities outside of Lithuania – from London to Copenhagen to Chicago and beyond
  • Invested significantly in international programs – often in partnership with Invest Lithuania – to promote Lithuania to S3 clients in the US and the UK
  • For the last five years has been the leading sponsor of the American Baltic Celebration annual awards gala in Washington, DC
  • Was the largest private company (financial) sponsor of the American Chamber of Commerce-supported US Trade Mission to Lithuania
  • Is the lead sponsor of the ExCel High School Exchange program, which brings Lithuanian students to the US to study for one year
  • Helped establish innovative professional training programs, such as the Mainframe Academy designed by an S3 client with Vilnius University, to provide skills and jobs to students willing to learn a specialized and high-demand skill
  • Supports a series of World Music performances, including American performers and others, for its third season in 2014.
  • Has been a leading sponsor of the opera in Vilnius
  • Is a major donor to an orphanage in the town of Pabrade, providing financial support and volunteer days by staff

These accomplishments and contributions were the reason Pasky, S3’s president and CEO, received the Global Lithuanian Award for Attraction of Investments in 2013 from the Global Lithuanian Leaders (GLL) in early January.

Cynthia Pasky is directly responsible for significant achievements in attracting foreign investment to Lithuania, creating a positive brand for Lithuania in the world, and educational and professional development of Lithuanian talent,” said Kotryna Stankutė-Jaščemskienė, director of Global Lithuanian Leaders. “She and her company have been passionate and steadfast champions of Lithuania in the world. They have earned huge respect in the local business community and with the prominent leaders who nominated her for the award. GLL is more than happy that the Global Lithuanian Awards created the opportunity to acknowledge and reward Cynthia Pasky and other global Lithuanians for the promotion of Lithuania in the world.”

Dalia Grybauskaitė and Cindy Pasky

President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė (left) with Strategic Staffing Solutions CEO Cindy Pasky (right)

That commitment earned Pasky and S3 significant stature among Lithuanians and Lithuanian business. The award was presented to Pasky by the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė for the contributions she and S3 have made to the development of Lithuanian business, science, arts and culture.

“It is indeed an honor to receive this award, but it is not about what I have done,” said Pasky. “It is about what the S3 team has done not only to further our business in Lithuania but also to give back to the Lithuanian community.”

Not content to just say thank you, each year, Pasky brings the entire S3 International team from Lithuania to Detroit for a week of training and development…and a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner, which she prepares personally and serves to the team in her home.
